Day 020 – Froggy Jump
First thing in the morning, we found out that there was some issue with Go Train and if we were to stick with them, we would never get to work so we ended up drove down to the office. Traffic was relatively light probably because people already started their holiday early.
Instead of trying to fight through the rush hour to head home, we stayed downtown for dinner. My hubby suggested to go to “Jump” one of Oliver & Bonacini restaurants. Sort of our own little Christmas splurge on ourselves. We had been to Canoe, which never failed us. Always have great service and great food. We also tried Auberge Du Pommier at one of the winterlicious event, it wasn’t too impressive. It’s not bad but not great.
First walked in, I was attracked to the cute decoration behind the hostess. There was this wall of clear tubes with light shinning from below and a frog statue. I guessed that’s why they are call “Jump”.
Our table was at the back of the restaurant where there was a glass roof in some funky angles as well as a wall of those clear tubes similar to the front. Our server was very attentive and kept us inform so we didn’t feel like we were forgotten.
First came the bread basket, the flat bread was awesome. So light, crunchy and at the same time flavorable. We ended up asking for more after we finished all the bread.
My hubby had the blue plate’s menu which is a fixed priced menu with a choice of three appetizer, main and dessert. He went with portebello mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta, grilled sirloin steak, and pumkin brulee. I didn’t go for the blue plate’s menu as I was drawn to the miso glazed cod. We also ordered crab cake to share as an appetizer and I couldn’t resist the temptation and ordered a chocolate mousse for dessert.
Appetizer – The portebello mushroom and goat cheese bruschetta seemed so simple but taste really good. An interesting alternative to the typical tomato bruschetta. As for the crab cake, it had a nice crisp outer layer and it wasn’t too fishy. It was okay but definitely better than a lot of other crab cakes I had try.
Main – The steak was suprisingly decent size and had some cruchy thin sweet potato fries on top of it. I didn’t try the steak but the sweet potato fries were interesting. It was a tad too salty and stiffed to handle. As for the miso glazed cod…. mmmmmm. It was amazing. I was never a big fan of fish but some places like Canoe (now I can add Jump to the list), made fish so good, I just love it. It’s so soft, smooth, sweet and buttery. Just melt in your mouth. And the red curry with the rice just tied everything together. The only thing I wasn’t too crazy about was the wild rice mixed in with the jasmine rice.
Dessert – pumpkin brulee was just too weird for both of us. We both didn’t like pumpkin to begin with and it looked as well as taste more like a pumpkin tart then brulee. As for me, I ended up trying one of their tiny dessert selections – baked chocolate espresso mousse. It came in a tiny espresso cup which was just enough for one bite. It wasn’t anything special, almost tasted like a very moist chocolate sponge cake with whip cream on top.
Overall, it’s a very good restaurant but on the pricey side. (approx. $35-50 a person) Very comparable with Canoe.
