Day 031 – House Cleaning with False Advertised Product

Let me re-write this post.  I was so frustrated with my runny nose, I simply couldn’t think properly.  So here we go again…..

After recuperated from all the Christmas party, I was going on a rampage to clean up the house for the New Year’s Eve party.  It’s nothing big, just a casual get together with our friends and watch the ball drops (in New York) or counter down (in Toronto) on TV.  This had become a annual tradition.

On Christmas, my mother-in-law loved to give some “fun” gift/stocking stuffer.  This year, she gave us Arm & Hammer – Carpet & Room Allergen Reducer and Odour Eliminator (with the power of BAKING SODA).

Arm and Hammer

I tried it today and had to say it’s a total FAILURE.  It’s definitely not reducing any allergen, it probably created more allergen.  And it’s not an odour eliminator, okay, let me correct myself, it’s a fragrance creator.  Why my mother-in-law gave us that?  Well, my husband was quite allergic at times (mostly around spring time) and my mother-in-law was sort of an adventurist.

Why I used it?  Not because my husband is allergic around this time of year but because we started the cabbage soup diet.  The cabbage soup that we made seemed to have strong odour and had be lingering around the house.  I thought “odour elimination” eh.  Beside, I have faith in baking soda, especially in my fridge.

I followed the instruction.  Sprinkled on the carpet and waited.  Then vacuumed it off.  The end result  – super allergic reaction for both my husband and I.  We were both sneezing uncontrollably.  I also had a runny nose that simply wouldn’t stop even though I took my allergy medication.  Good thing I only did a small portion of the carpet and I went back a couple times with the vacuum trying to get rid of as much of the powder as possible.  The box said lightly scented but it’s so strong that my husband could smell it all the way at the other end of the house and on a different floor.    Talked about false advertisement.

Although they did put on the box with small caution print – do not use if sensitive to fragrance and/or cleaning product.  We both are not SENSITIVE to that, how did you explain our reaction to this product.

I would definitely NOT use this product again.  For the fact that it caused such allergy reaction for both my husband and I.  Aside from that, I was still quite a skeptic regarding these type of product.  Adding more “stuff” to reduce “stuff” (This Arm & Hammer product… Frebreze)  They traped the “stuff” but where do the “stuff” went??

By the way, I finally used the Dyson vacuum cleaner for a couple of times now.  It’s been great.  I had become slighly obsessed with vacuuming because of it.  I was quite amazed even though I vacuum often, there were still so much dust.  Felt like I was living in filth before we got the Dyson.  I guess that’s the problem with carpet that it attracked dust.  I still had another experiment in mind I wanted to try one day to see how well the Dyson work compared to the old vacuum.  Will see if I managed to do that.  Will keep you posted.
