Day 041 – Crazy Friday Evening
It seemed that it had become a tradition for the Friday around my hubby’s birthday we would get together with Nick & Cat for dinner. We all enjoyed a good steak and last year we went to Ruth’s Chris. This year to top it, we went to a place calls Jacob’s & Co. It’s located on Brant Street.
The building was quite interesting. The entrance was this deck/patio with really tall wood fence on the one side. After you got in, you had to walk down to the hostess. Then the hostess would take you up again to the dinner room from another stair. The place had a really interesting layout. The dinning room was a contemporary design with black stonewall, which couches, and these giant lamp shades. I had to say the ambience was really nice. It’s very different from those dark steak houses that had lots of wood finishes. On the one side of the dinner room it had a glass room show casing the meat.
To start, they gave us pop-overs which is like a Yorkshire pudding but with cheddar. It’s nice and not too greasy nor heavy. As recommended by our friends, we ordered the Caesar salad. The server came to the table with the cart and worked on the salad dressing and salad right there. The bacon and croutons were amazing but the salad was slightly to the salty side.
I had a 6oz tenderloin. It’s just the right size and cooked to perfection. They provided different kind of sauces and salts for us to add to the steak. I tried the different salt they bought out. 1. Sea salt, 2. Smoked salt and 3 black salt. The black salt has this mineral taste to it and went very well with the steak. I quite enjoyed it. We also ordered a few appetizer/side to share. The fat duck fries were heavenly but probably not great for our diets. The roasted mushrooms and the asparagus were so-so. Nothing special that worth writing home about. To top everything off, we went for the dessert. The 3 of us shared the ice cream while my hubby went for the vanilla crème brule. We were all amazed that the crème brule came in a approx 6”diameter plate. It’s much bigger than what we have normally seen for a crème brule. Before we left, they gave us coffee cakes to go which was like a marble (chocolate/vanilla) muffin. Overall, it was a lovely meal but on the pricey side.
After dinner we went to see Avatar in IMAX 3D. It’s my first time watching a movie at IMAX 3D with the funny glasses. The story line was okay but I had to say the graphics were amazing. They made everything so realistic, I almost forgot that they were mostly computer generated. As for the whole 3D experience, it’s definitely went a long way since those red/blue glasses. I wished they would have a short clip before the feature movies for our eyes to adjust first. Took me a little while at the beginning of the movie to adjust my eyes.
I think overall my hubby had a great time and a great start for his birthday.
